Disintermediation is a long fancy word that means essentially cutting out the middleman (intermediaries). We are in an age where there is huge potential for disintermediation in many industries – especially real estate. It seems like just about everyone today is talking about disruption in real estate but through all of the hype, what is really fact from fiction?
Realising the disruptive impact technology has had on many industries both here and overseas, Elite Agent Magazine gathered together experts both in and outside real estate to answer the challenging questions facing the industry with respect to productivity, technology and where the issues may be for small businesses and the real estate industry in the next five to 10 years.
The Getting Ready For 2020 Report by Elite Agent includes some of our country’s finest business minds and headed by Managing Editor at Elite Agent, Samantha McLean, it’s quite possibly the most comprehensive report so far on the topic of disruption in real estate here in Australia.
According to the report, 82 per cent of real estate industry jobs are at risk of a digital disruption by 2035. Along with the other panellists, Sam believes that disruption won’t necessarily come from technology, but possibly new business models that leverage technology effectively.
Michael Ossipoff from Telstra said in the report – “We (Telstra) ask our customers the question, ‘If you were setting up in business again, would you set it up the same way?’ Almost every company says, ‘No, I probably wouldn’t.’ ‘Would you do things differently?’ ‘Yes I would.’ Then if yes, we ask them, ‘Are you running at 100 per cent efficiency?’ They always say ‘No’ to that.
