Filmic Pro ($14.99) is the smartphone video app that was used to shoot 2015 Sundance Film Festival entry, Tangerine, a movie shot almost entirely with an iPhone 5S. The app provides fine-grained control over the focus, the colour, and the temperature of the video—giving a professional quality to promotional content that doesn’t require you shell out the big bucks.

Filmic Pro offers one of the most advanced video cameras for mobile, and offers the most the most responsive manual camera interface for smartphones, making it no small wonder it was recognized several times for being iOS Best Video Camera App of the Year. Do note that this smartphone video app is also available for Android devices and can be purchased through the Google Play store.

If you want to take things to the next level, some of its most salient features include high image quality (100mpbs at 4K or 50mbps at 1080), manual control over white balance, focus, and zoom, and customizable motion effects. Additionally, this smartphone video app allows you to shoot at 24 or 48 fps—for a cinematic quality or you can opt for broadcast frame rates.

On top of that—there’s the ability to share your creations on social media (hello, Instagram), as well as a mode that allows you to control file size to avoid using too much valuable real estate. After all, we all know iPhones have storage issues!

2. Pro Cam 5

Pro Cam 5 is another smartphone video app that offers a lot of versatility. Originally designed as an app for still photos, the Pro Cam 5 has multiple shooting modes, including video.

Aside from standard-issue video features like image stabilization, multiple modes and resolutions, Pro Cam 5 comes with 60+ filters, 17 lenses and even copyright stamps you can customize. In the video mode, you’ve got ultra HD capabilities, volume control, and the ability to add text overlays.

The downside (and this may not matter for many users) is that Pro Cam 5 does not support frame rates at 60 fps or above. It also doesn’t come with camera stabilization, so you might want to add a tripod into the mix to get the most out of this smartphone video app.

3. Movie Pro (our pick – we use it all the time!)

Movie Pro ($5.99, only available on iOS) is pretty similar to Filmic Pro, but, as you can see, is a more affordable offering when it comes to smartphone video apps. Both programs provide more manual control over recordings than you’d get with the default camera setting on your iPhone.

The advantage of Movie Pro over the native camera app is that you can control the frame rate of the video—for a more cinematic effect. And, you can easily control the volume using the microphone control while the app is in use.

This smartphone video app works a lot like Filmic Pro, but comes with a different interface that some like more. Additional features include a Spy Mode which allows you to secretly record video (maybe not a great idea in terms of business ethics!) and will also let you preset the duration of video being recorded.

4. Kinomatic

Kinomatic ($3.99), winner of Best New App in over 100 countries, is another great camera app that allows you to shoot and edit videos within the same app.

Kinomatic, like the other smartphone video apps we’ve looked at, comes with the requisite settings for audio and video frame rates, exposure, focus, but on the editing side, the app allows you to save whatever things you settle on as a preset for continuity on projects that can’t be shot in a day.

The Super Persist function also helps agents keep their white balance, exposure, and focus settings uniform between sessions, which can be great for helping you maintain a level of consistency across all branded content—even if you can’t do it all in one fell swoop.

Long story short, incorporating video into your marketing strategy doesn’t require a film degree nor a whole load of expensive equipment. Making quality videos has never been more accessible. The cost to create video and the barriers to entry have never been lower.
